The Superfood Chain

Explores the facts and myths of "superfoods" and how the superfood industry affects food security for fishers and farmers globally.

"I'm a sucker when it comes to food trends. But are exotic superfoods really that good for you, or are we better off buying locally? In making this film, I realize there is a way to eat healthily and do right by farmers.” – Ann Shin

THE SUPERFOOD CHAIN is a POV documentary exploring how the global superfood industry affects food security for farmers and fishers around the world. Shot in 4K, this gorgeous documentary follows filmmaker Ann Shin as she meets families in Bolivia, Ethiopia, Philippines, and Haida Gwaii affected by the superfood industry.

Every year, the western world is introduced to a new ‘superfood’ that boasts extraordinary nutritional features, and year after year we buy them. The Superfood Chain explores the facts and myths behind superfoods, and reveals the ripple effect of the ‘superfood’ industry on farming and fishing families around the world.

The documentary examines the larger issues around globalization of superfoods, including unintended effects on food security and health, sustainable farming, and fair trade food practices. With cinematic ‘day-in-the-life’ photography we capture the joy that food gives to these families, but also explore the serious issues around global demand of superfoods.
